BECOME A VITA VOLUNTEER

United Way of the River Cities is seeking volunteers to help working families achieve financial stability at tax time. Becoming a VITA volunteer is a great way to meet new people, learn a new skill, boost your resume, and have fun — all while helping your community.

Why is this free tax preparation program important? Our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program directly helps people who don’t make a lot of money to get what they’ve earned. Even if a taxpayer isn’t eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), VITA saves them hundreds of dollars in preparation fees.

Am I Eligible for Free Tax Prep?

Tax returns can be prepared and e-filed for most individuals and families who

  • Have an income of $64,000 or less.

  • Are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

  • Are eligible for West Virginia Senior Citizen Tax Credit or Homestead Credit

  • Have business income without losses, business use of the home, or depreciation

VITA Sites CANNOT prepare returns with:

  • Farm Income
  • Rental Income
  • Complicated Schedule D
  • Parts 4 & 5 of Form 8962
  • Schedule C with losses, business use of home or depreciation

STILL NEED TO FILE 2022 RETURNS?

We are still filing 2022 returns for non-filers who have not received stimulus payments or expanded child tax credit.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO MY TAX APPOINTMENT?

If you think it is a tax document, bring it. It is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

There are a few items that you MUST bring in order for us to prepare your return, and they are:

  • Photo identification for the taxpayer and spouse
  • Social Security cards or statements for EVERYONE on the tax return
  • All income documents such as W-2, 1099-R, 1099-MISC, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B,SSA-1099, 1099-NEC etc.
  • Form 1095-A Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, if you have Marketplace Coverage
  • Form WV/SCTC-1, if you are eligible for the WV Homestead Credit or Senior Citizen Tax Credit
  • Bank routing and account numbers, if you want to use direct deposit for a refund.

Do It Yourself!

You can prepare your own returns for free with myfreetaxes.com.

It’s really free! No charge for 2023 federal or state returns. Most individuals and families who earned less than $64,000 in 2022 qualify to use MyFreeTaxes. Online help will be available if you have questions.

Need a place to get online to do it yourself?

Visit any Cabell County Public Library when open to self-prepare your federal and state tax returns. The library staff can help you get online, but you must prepare the return. No appointment needed.
